Spring has arrived! A general rule you will hear from Licensed Wildlife Rehabilitators is ‼️ DO NOT offer food or water to any injured or orphaned wild animal ‼️ This goes for the smallest song bird, an orphaned duckling, and even the largest birds of prey!

🦅 All responsible Wildlife Rehabilitators take continuing education courses and/or study with experienced Federally Licensed Rehabilitators when learning the anatomy of wild animals, especially birds. This understanding is essential in order to safely and properly administer oral medication.

🦅 When giving food or medications to a bird by gavage (i.e. using a tube or crop needle that goes down the throat), it is very important to place the instrument down the esophagus and not the trachea. The esophagus in birds has a very broad opening at the back of the mouth. In contrast, the glottis (i.e. tracheal opening) appears as a slit on the floor of the mouth just caudal to the tongue (See photo 2 & 3). In order to avoid aspiration of fluid when giving liquid medication, the medicine should be administered where it will not enter the glottis.

🦅 Specific techniques and tools are used depending on the size and species of the bird. Feeding and offering water is not as simple as it might seem.

🦅 Not all birds eat the same! Some are avivorous, frugivorous, granivorous, and some insectivorous. Understanding each species and their diet is essential for raising a healthy, releasable bird. If fed the wrong diet, they will not develop properly and are at risk for being unreleasable, and may even die from lack of nutrition.

🦅 Even using an eye dropper or putting the smallest bit of water into a birds mouth can still aspirate and kill them. If you ever come across an injured or orphaned wild animal DO NOT attempt to offer food and water. Instead, call a Licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator or an Animal Hosptial who handles wildlife, and await further instructions.

Montana’s war on wolves continues— unchecked and brutal. The 2024-2025 wolf hunting season officially ended on March 15, 2025, but the death toll is still rising. 298 wolves have now been reported killed, making this the second deadliest season since wolves were stripped of protections over a decade ago and removed from the Endangered Species List.

At least 110 wolves were trapped and 9 were snared, suffering in steel jaws for up to 48 hours before being shot or left to die.
Across Montana, wolves-including young pups-are pre-baited, gunned down at night with thermal scopes, lured in with calls, and killed over bait piles. Many are left to rot in the field, their lives reduced to trophies and bounties.

Montana’s wolf “management” isn’t about ethics or conservation-it’s an extermination plan driven by a handful of powerful special interests. For just $10-$12, residents can buy a wolf tag. With a $28 license, they can legally trap or snare up to 10 wolves. Party trapping-where groups set unlimited hidden snares and traps-is legal. Meanwhile, a bounty program pays $750-$1,000 per wolf, fueling this senseless slaughter with no oversight.

Despite these staggering numbers, anti-wolf politicians in Montana’s legislature are still pushing for even more aggressive killing policies. Wolves are not just numbers-they are sentient, vital beings who play a crucial role in our ecosystems. This relentless assault must end.

When I (@jamie.surya) first went vegan I felt a desperate need to scream to everyone what I had just found out. It consumed me then, and it still consumes me now — I just know how to manage it better. It’s there every day, all day. At every restaurant, super market, commercial, conversation. Maybe some can understand the feeling of keeping a passion, a depression, and an anger so deep inside, so hidden away, that sometimes you just cry by yourself because if you told someone you were sad about ducks being eaten they’d just look at you confused. After I subjected myself to one too many traumatizing situations, I stepped back and thought about where my place was in the world when it came to animal rights/liberation/activism

And I’m really thankful I did because it eventually led Andres and I to @animalnationinc where I got to gather my excitement, my sadness, my desire to learn, and my desperation to change the world for animals and finally felt good about what I’m doing. At the time of these photos I was taking care of and rehabilitating animals more than I was teaching yoga, more than I was spending time with my family and friends — more than anything else — and I couldn’t have been happier. Luckily (but also unfortunately) Andres shares the same heartbreak with me and we were able to do this together and support each other through the pain and enjoyment.

After a few years of intense, hands on animal care, we’ve stepped back, and are excited to get back to our education roots. We are relaunching @together.vegan.change, the community organization we founded back in 2018. Here are a few things to look forward to:

🌱 Monday, January 6th @together.vegan.change with be speaking at this months @rocklandcoalition virtual meeting discussing veganism as a social justice movement.

🌱 We are partnering with @glitterthickett to create a fully plant-based community fridge in Nyack

🌱 We are developing a “What to do about Wildife” teach-in for the community to better understand orphaned and injured wildlife, and how (if at all!) to help them

🌱 Restaurant outreach (more details coming soon!)

🦜 Birds Aren’t Pets—They’re Wild Beings Who Belong in the Sky

Keeping birds as pets is inherently cruel. These intelligent, social animals are meant to fly free, live in flocks, and thrive in their natural environments—not confined to cages in our homes.

The pet trade captures and breeds birds for profit, tearing them away from their families and habitats. Many suffer in cramped, barren conditions that deny their most basic instincts. Even when purchased with good intentions, most people are unprepared for the physical and emotional needs of birds, leading to neglect or abandonment.

Rescues are overwhelmed with surrendered birds—parrots, cockatiels, and others—whose owners discovered they couldn’t handle their lifelong care. These birds didn’t ask to be bred or sold. They are victims of human greed.

It’s time to end this cycle. Breeding, capturing, and selling birds needs to be illegal and we need to focus on adopting the birds who are already here, education, and protecting birds in the wild where they belong.

Let’s speak up for these beautiful beings and ensure their future is one of freedom—not confinement.

Each year, a religious ritual takes place on the streets of NYC and parts of Rockland County, where live chickens are used as part of a ceremony intended to transfer and absolve people of their sins. We explained to the family that these birds, their nests, and eggs, were all protected by the Migratory Bird Act and they had to wait until they left the attic to patch up the holes and start cleaning up.

Well - the little babies were unable to find the very small opening that mom came in and out of, so we spent an hour crouched in their attic rescuing these birds and preparing them for release the next morning.

PSA‼️: While we in no way are a wildlife removal service, PLEASE be mindful that many so-called “pest” removal services advertise “humane” removal of animals as per DEC guidelines. What they do not tell you is that DEC guidelines themselves are not humane. It is illegal to relocate wildlife so they are killed instead. The most important thing to do is secure your property in a way to minimize unfavorable interaction with wildlife (patch up holes, secure garbage cans, do not leave food out in the open, etc).

A cute little friend we got to transport over the weekend after he was attacked and then dropped by a hawk!

This donut shaped towel placed in a box with air holes in a safe, dark area away from predators is a great trick to help a bird who either just needs time to recoup after hitting into your window, or while you wait for someone to pick up an injured bird.

Birds have air sacs (that work similar to our lungs) all along the sides of their body. The air sacs need to expand and contract freely. If the bird is left laying on its side, the bird can't breathe comfortably.

(Well meaning people left bread for this pigeon but please remember to never feed or give water to an injured animal unless you speak to a professional first) I’m so glad we walked in the direction we did because this little guy/girl was not doing well. Luckily we have the @animalhelpnowapp (which allows you to find Wildlife Rehabilitation Centers and independent Wildlife Rehabbers wherever you are) and we were able to drop off the pigeon at @wildlifecornell.

Our second rescue and transport was a backyard chicken who developed either a neurological disorder, caught a virus, or sustained an injury. They were looking for someone to take them because they didn’t want to have to kill them. We were able to get the chicken dropped off to us where I then brought her/him to get specialized medical care. We are hoping for an update soon.

After a brief chase and a bit of patience, Jamie was able to gently place a net over the gull, safely pick him up, walk him to the car, and get him to our top wildlife vet. He was transferred to a licensed rehabilitation center specifically for birds last night and we are hoping for an update today.

We often get thanked for rescues like these but they would not happen WITHOUT YOU! We rely on the kind hearts of the public to reach out to us when they see injured or orphaned wildlife. Due to the numerous sightings of coyotes with mange in our area, the Hudson Valley Humane Society (HVHS) and local licensed Wildlife Rehabilitators, have teamed up to track and record these animals’ whereabouts in an effort to help preserve our wildlife and ecosystem.

Mange is a highly contagious skin disease of mammals caused by mites and is characterized by hair loss, itching, and secondary infections. Coyotes/foxes/squirrels living with mange are identified by thinned out hair, especially on their tails.

Wildlife studies found that coyotes infected with mange were more likely to use human resources for food consumption than healthy coyotes, and have a larger range of movement, showing more activity during the day.

We need your help to monitor, collect data, and report. Security and trail cameras are ideal to capture data if you have them.

The goal is to use community science data to determine where the animal or animals show up consistently and at what times. The animals will not be trapped, relocated, or euthanized.

Here is the information we ask you to obtain and report:

Date
Address (specific)
Time of day
Behavior (walking, eating, resting etc…)
Photograph or video if possible, for identification purposes
And any additional detailed and specific information you can provide

Although not a danger to humans, please be discreet and do not approach, as it can interfere with the animals’ behavior patterns. Observe and collect data from afar. This is the important information we are attempting to collect.

This is a post about a chicken and this is a post about politics that shouldn't be politics. This is a post about a terrifying virus--or two--and why I implore everyone who can to get vaccinated once they can.

This is Toni. Toni came here on the 3rd after her guardian realized she was too unwell for his continued care. He had become her guardian three weeks before, after his 92-year-old neighbor determined he was unable to care for Toni and her sisters. Toni was relinquished to me when her minor head tilt quickly evolved into a full twisting of her neck, rendering her unable to remain upright for more than a few minutes at a time. She stopped eating and drinking on her own. She panicked as her body refused to move at her will. At just 2 years old--so, so young--she is now a hospice chicken as she lives through Marek's Disease.

Marek's is infamous in the world of chickens. It's the go-to "diagnosis" among lazy vets who don't want to bother with actual diagnostics. And it's a dreaded legitimate diagnosis in cases like Toni's, where it was actually confirmed via PCR. Marek's Disease causes lymphomas, inflammation, and tumors, particularly affecting nerves. It progresses differently in different chickens, but commonly results in paralysis, tremors, and internal tumors and lesions. It is also highly contagious.

It's hard to put into words how sick I felt learning Toni has Marek's and won't recover; she will only get worse. And some reading this might wonder why on earth I brought this chicken into my house, where so many other healthy chickens live. The answer is simple: vaccines.

In the spring, when I rescued chicks for the first time, I realized I had to start thinking about vaccinations in a very real way. In the chicken killing industry, everyone is vaccinated for Marek's. But in the world of mail-order chicks (like Toni) and farm store sales for backyard flocks (like Afikomen), vaccines are rarely used and Toni's decline is the direct result. 🥳 First Adoption of 2021 🥳 This is little Guinness and his new dad @n_carnicelli ! We got a call from our friend @lilyryan.jpg who needed help trapping this baby and his mom.

Once we trapped the baby, Lily quickly took him in and did a great job socializing him and getting him comfortable with humans. We are so grateful for foster parents and the unending work they do!

And thank you Nick for opening up your heart and home to this kitten in need! We are so happy for the both of you!

🥳 First Adoption of 2021 🥳 This is little Guinness and his new dad @n_carnicelli ! We got a call from our friend @lilyryan.jpg who needed help trapping this baby and his mom.

Once we trapped the baby, Lily quickly took him in and did a great job socializing him and getting him comfortable with humans. We are so grateful for foster parents and the unending work they do!

And thank you Nick for opening up your heart and home to this kitten in need! We are so happy for the both of you!

‼️UPDATE! BANANA FOUND HIS HOME ‼️ 🏠 🍌 Can you help Banana find his forever home? 🍌🏠 He is around 1.5 years, not yet neutered, has all of his shots, and is FIV+. He is the sweetest boy and just want to nuzzle all day long.

Our friend, TVC member, and Banana’s foster mom @_rachelephant_ found Banana and his sibling (who already found his forever home!) being offered on Craigslist for free and knew she had to act fast. Often times when animals are advertised for free they end up in the wrong hands and are used as bait for dog fighting training. It’s a terrible and sad reality. Some people think offering their companion animals for free will increase the likelihood of them getting adopted, but it usually does more harm than good.

If you are ever in the position of having to surrender a companion animal always try and reach out to a rescue organization. If you ever find yourself trying to adopt out an animal always ask for an adoption fee and screening form. You can reach out to us at any time for information about this.

If you are a victim of domestic violence and are worried about the safety of your companion animal look into the Paws for Safety Program through the Center For Safety and Change. This program confidentially houses the companion animals of any client who is concerned about, or who have witnessed, their pets being threatened or harmed by their abuser. By safely guarding the pet, it removes the potential of an abuser using a beloved pet as a weapon to keep a person, and a family, in a dangerous situation. The goal of this free program, supported by the Hudson Valley Humane Society, is to ultimately reunite companion animals with their owners.

KAPOROS RESCUE UPDATE ‼️ Back in September our team was on the ground here in Rockland County during Kaporos, a religious sacrifice, where thousands of chickens were slaughtered on the streets.

Our team was able to rescue two chickens who needed medical attention immediately. Joy had a wing amputation (check back later this week for an update) and TK (pictures above!) had his toe amputated.

Toe injuries are very common during transport to slaughter houses, and at Kaporos. The chickens are stuffed in small crates that are stacked on stop or each other, slammed to the ground, and slid along the pavement. If a toe or foot is falling out of the crate then it gets crushed.

TK had a long healing journey but is now a happy house hen who gets supervised outdoor time. Our friend Vanessa Lapins and her family are incredible caretakers for TK and we are so grateful for her and all she has done to make sure TK continues to thrive.

Unfortunately, like all birds at Kaporos, TK was bred to be meat bird. Which comes with a ton of complications. Their body grows at rate their feet can’t keep up with, they are constantly hungry, and have trouble moving and flying properly.

We love and are rooting for you TK! 💚✨
